Senior Sal Annarumma is our sparkplug on the Boys Volleyball team this season. Playing libero, Sal has over 200 digs this season. Sal has helped lead the team to the “A” South Championship as well as numerous tournament titles at Bergen Catholic, Marlboro and the Southern Invitational. Sal is without a doubt the leader of the the nationally ranked Rams! Congratulations!

Senior Dana Ohlson set a new school and meet record at the 2012 “Lion Invitational” in the Long Jump event with a jump of 18-10 and was named meet MVP. Dana has helped lead Southern to the “A” South Championship as well as numerous invitational meet championships at Hackensack, Georgian Court and Middletown North. Dana will continue both her education and athletic career at Tulane University next season. Congratulations!

Chase is a 9th grade Varsity golfer for southern this season. He placed 6th out of 80 golfers in the Wildcat Invitational with a score of 86. He helped the team to their most recent title, the Ocean County Championship by placing in the Top 20 out of 84 golfers with a score of 88. Chase has played in all varsity matches and averages 42.5 strokes for 9 holes with a personal best score of 2 over par (38) vs. Oakcrest on Tuesday, April 10th. Congratulations!

Chelsea was crowned the Group IV Pole Vault champion on Saturday, February 18th after clearing an Indoor PR (and Southern Regional School Record) in a NJ best of 12’-00”. This performance comes 1 week after winning the South Jersey Group IV Sectional at 11’-06”. She also won the Shore Conference Pole Vault title earlier this season.

Swimming

At the Shore Conference Championship Meet the Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Joseph Niccoli, Sean Tallon, Connor McGrann, and Brian O’Connell nearly qualified for the State Championship Swimming Meet missing the cut time by the closest of margins. One-one hundredth of a second. One week later they had a final opportunity to qualify during the final race of what would be the final dual meet of the season. The relay team broke through the qualifying time by more than 3 seconds earning a trip to the State Championship meet for only the second time in our team’s history. The relay team of Joseph Niccoli, Sean Tallon, Connor McGrann, and Brian O'Connell along with the rest of their teammates are extremely proud of this accomplishment. Training is currently underway for what promises to be another great race. The boys will be competing among the fastest swimmers in the state and we are all eager to represent Southern Regional when the State Championship Swimming Meet takes place during the weekend of March 3rd & 4th .

Tom Scherzer

On Monday, January 23rd the Boys Swimming Team honored this season’s seniors and Tom Scherzer made his races count. For the final home meet of the regular season, he turned in personal best performances in both the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke. Tom has been a regular part of the lineup for sprint freestyle events. His time for the 50 at 24.39 helped his team to its 8th victory of the season. Later in the meet Tom turned in a time of 1:11.19 for the 100 yard breaststroke which puts him at 7th best all time for the team. Coach John Schulze said, “His dedication to the team and un-ending commitment to improvement have been characteristics of this senior’s career. Tom will be missed next season but his experience will remain with the team always”. Congratulations!

Emily Dellane is a Junior Athlete on our cheerleading squad. Emily has battled back from an injury and has been performing excellently this season. She is a 3 year starter on the squad. Coach Jackie South stated that “Emily has amazing tumbling skills including a standing back tuck and layout, she’s dedicated and leads by example with her stunting. She is a talented flyer and hits her skills consistently in competition”. Emily and the rest of Southern Cheerleading qualified and will be performing at the UCA National Cheerleading Competition in Orlando, Fla. later this month. Congratulations!

On Thursday, January 5, 2012 Senior Bowler John Bennett set a new school record by shooting a 772 series against Barnegat HS. During the following week John had another great day with scores of 198, 264 and 267 for a High series of 729. Coach Salvatore said, “John is the only bowler I have had that has shot 3 – 700 series in the same season”. Congratulations!

Track

Senior Dana Ohlson won the High Jump with a personal best of 5’04” at Ocean County Championships. That mark ties her for fourth overall in the State of NJ. She has also finished 3rd in the 55 meter High Hurdles in a personal best time of 8.83 seconds. The Girls Indoor Track Team has won both the Ocean county title as well as the Ocean County Relay championship this season. Dana will continue her education next year at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana where she will be on an athletic/academic scholarship.

Tyler Galgano is the captain on our Boy’s Swim Team. The swim team is off to a strong start with a 4 and 1 record so far this season. Jane Harkness is having a great senior year. Jane is leading by example and the Rams are off to a strong 4 and 1 start on the season. Kyle is the goalie on the Ice Hockey team at Southern and has led the Rams to a starting record of 1 win and 1 loss. In those two games vs. Freehold Boro and Ocean Twp. Kyle has saved 45 shots on goal including 27 in the Rams victory over Ocean Twp. Congratulations!

Annie Smith is a 10th grade student that participates on our Girls bowling team. Annie bowled a series high vs. Central of 585. During the central match she bowled three games of the following scores; 200, 172 and 213. Currently she ranks second in the league with a 174 average. Congratulations!

Jillian Smith is a member of our Girls Cross Country Team. This season Jillian ran the 5k course at Ocean County Park in her personal best time of 18:34 to place 9th overall in the Shore Conference Championships. Her time ranks her #4 in Southern History only Behind Jillian Smith (Michigan), Danielle Tauro (Michigan) and Chelsea Cox (Georgetown). Jillian will now be mentioned with great company as part of our strong, Girls Cross Country tradition. Jillian also helped lead our team to the 2011 Ocean County Championship along with the team placing 3rd in the South Jersey Group 4 Championships. Congratulations!

TJ Bellissimo is a 2nd time winner this fall for WaWa “Athlete of the Week”. He had a record breaking performance against TR North on 10/14/11 with 6 rushing touchdowns to lead the Rams to a 41 to 20 victory. The next week TJ led Southern with 3 rushing touchdowns and helped the Rams clinch the 2011 “A” South Championship in Football. He has already broken another school record with most points scored in a season. Congratulations!

Football

T.J. Bellissimo sparked the Football program to a victory over Colts Neck 21 to 6 on Saturday, 9/17/11. T.J. rushed for 110 yards on 34 carries and 2 touchdowns, 1 rushing & 1 receiving. He has three touchdowns on the year so far and is a threat to any opposing team. T.J. also contributes on special teams as well as the defensive squad. Congratulations!

Jessica Colella is a 12th grade student athlete that participates on our Varsity Field Hockey Squad. Jessica is a 4 year program athlete who plays defense for the Rams. The team is off to a 3 – 1 – 1 record so far this season. Jessica stepped up big defensively in all of our games especially the TR North overtime game in which the Mariners threatened to score but were denied. Congratulations!

Stef Crosby is a senior student athlete who participated on the Rams Girl’s Golf Team. She shot a 49 at Atlantis with a birdie on a long par 5 to help lead the team to a win over Marlboro to end the season. Coach McCabe states that “the girl’s on the team were a pleasure to coach and showed steady improvement throughout the season”. The girl’s team finished 3rd in the Ocean County Tournament which qualified them for the Shore Conference Tournament. Congratulations!

Bri Marschal is a junior track & field member for Southern. She threw 36’ 6.5” (personal best) in shot to take 2nd place. She also placed 5th in the disc throwing 110’ 10”. She has also been a part of 2 school relay records over the past couple of weeks and just continues to improve everyday. She has helped the Rams clinc anoth undefeated “A” South Championship this year.

Ryan North is a Junior Track & field Member for the Rams. The team currently has completed an undefeated season and clinched the “A” South championship for the 2011 season. He is a three year letter winner in Track and he is the 2nd best triple jump in the shore. He is currently ranked 8th in the state.

Rick Dunphey is a senior Lacrosse player for the Rams. The team currently has a record of 3 and 0.He is a four year letter winner in Lacrosse and he is also ranked #1 academically in the Class of 2011. In the Rams victory over Lacey Twp. Rick had 9 goals and 2 assists. In a victory over Marlboro Rick had 3 goals and 3 assists. We look for more success from Rick and our lacrosse team. Congratulations!

Kyle Casaletto is a 12th grade student on our Wrestling Team. Kyle has compiled a record of 36 and 2 this season. Also, he has won the District 24 title as well as the Region 6 title this winter at 125 lbs. He was named Outstanding Wrestler at both the 2010 Mustang Classic and 2011 District 24 tournament championship. In his career he has earned 118 wins, 3 time district champion, 3 time region champion and 2 time NJ place winner finishing 8th as a sophomore and 2nd as a junior. During the first weekend of March Kyle will head back to the state tournament in Atlantic City to represent the Rams. Good Luck & Congratulations!

Tyler’s leadership is a main reason why the Rams have qualified for both the Shore Conference “Dowd Cup” Tournament as well as the state tournament. Amanda Holloway is a senior student athlete on the Girl’s Basketball Team. Amanda is a three year starter for the Rams at point guard. She currently leads the team in assists and steals. Amanda is ranked 2nd on the team in scoring and hit a big 3 pt. shot at the buzzer to defeat Shawnee and send Southern into the NJSIAA Group 4 playoffs. Congratulations!

Anthony Vincent is a 12th grade student on our Wrestling Team. The Wrestling team won the Shore Conference Tournament on Saturday January 29, 2011 for the schools third overall SCT title and first title since 1998. The team is currently ranked #1 in the Shore Conference. Anthony Vincent scored a big victory for the Rams on that day by pin in the 171 lbs. weight class in overtime to propel Southern to victory. Anthony and the rest of his teammates have the #1 seed in the South Jersey Sectional Tournament which starts on Wednesday – February 9th. Congratulations!

Chrissy is a senior student athlete on the girls swim team. The swim team won two meets this past week. On Friday they defeated Lacey Twp. where Chrissy won 1st place in the Freestyle with a time of 25.78. She was also a member of the victorious relay team which won 3 events on that day. On Monday the Rams defeated Point Boro. Chrissy took first in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle events. She is the 3rd highest point total in school history for girls swimming. Congratulations!

Samantha Rodriguez is an 11th grade student. She is off to a strong start for the 2010-11 Girl’s Winter Track Team. The team so far this season has won both the Shore Conference “A” South Division and Ocean County Relay Titles. Her performance at the Ocean County Relays was a four gold medal result in the events of shuttle hurdles, high jump, 4 x 200 and the sprint medley.
